299720Cities 20202020848474Richmond CouncilUnited Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern IrelandEuropeClimate Hazards and VulnerabilityClimate Hazards2.3aPlease report on how climate change impacts health outcomes and health services in your city.7Please explain1We have not prepared a specific health related risk and vulnerability assessment for climate change. However, some climate related issues are the subject of existing public health action plans, in particular around targeting fuel poverty and air pollution related illnesses. Discussions are ongoing with our Public Health department to more closely link their work to Climate Change. As outlined in response to question 2.1, Climate Change can be expected to have a number of impacts on health. This includes direct health outcomes, such as an increase in excess mortality where there is extremely hot weather, and an increase in vector borne and water borne diseases as the climate changes and flooding becomes a more significant issue. Climate Change will also impact on health systems, as we may see an increase in demand for resources and pressure on infrastructure both from this extra demand and from extreme weather events/damage to infrastructure. Finally, areas that are not directly related to Public Health, such as food availability, and the quality of the built environment, will have a knock-on impact on the health of our population.07/16/2021 01:47:15

The City has approved a citywide residential organics program to be launched in 2023, and is developing a multi-unit organics program. The Industrial, Commercial & Institutional sector will also be required to have recycling and organics through a bylaw that will be phased in between 2021 and 2023. Expansion of the landfill is underway and includes opportunities recycling and recovery of large items at a new integrated facility that will be opened by 2023. Together these new diversion opportunities are projected to divert between 41-54% of waste and The Solid Waste Reduction and Diversion Plan to be released in early 2021 will outline additional initiatives to reach the City's target.07/16/2021 01:47:15
