A recent study by expatistan.com ranked Honolulu as the 23rd highest cost of living in the world (out of 348) and the 11th highest in North America (out of 104). A report issued by Aloha United Way discusses the financial hardships Hawaiians face, namely the ALICE report. ALICE families, those that are Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed have income above the federal poverty level, but not high enough to afford the five basic household necessities: housing, child care, food, transportation, and health care. This is mainly due to the the dominance of low wage jobs, high costs of housing, community resources. The ALICE report defines and uses the Household Stability Budget to quantify how much income is needed to support and sustain an economically viable household, including both a 10 percent savings plan and the cost of a smartphone. The average annual Household Survival Budget for a four-person family living in Hawai‘i is $72,336 – more than double the adjusted U.S. poverty level for Hawaii of $27,890 per year for the same size family. This average household survival budget translates to a hourly wage of $36.17 for one parent or $18.09 for two parents. The average household survival budget for a single-adult in Hawaii is $28,128, translating to about $14.06 per hour. Housing represents a Hawaii family’s greatest expense – an average of $1,362 per month for a two-bedroom apartment for a family at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Fair Market Rent. The average annual Household Survival Budget for a four-person family living in Hawaii is $72,336, an increase of 26 percent from the start of the Great Recession in 2007. That increase was driven primarily by a 77 percent increase in the cost of healthcare, a 35 percent increase in the cost of food, and a 24 percent increase in the cost of child care. The rate of inflation over the same period was 14 percent. The Household Survival Budget varies across Hawaii counties. They are most expensive in the City and County of Honolulu at $75,204 per year for a family and $30,096 per year for a single adult.07/16/2021 01:47:15
