303475Cities 2020202013113Newcastle City CouncilUnited Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern IrelandEuropeWater SecurityWater Supply14.2bPlease explain why you do not consider your city to be exposed to any substantive water-related risk.2Please explain1Please explainNorthumbrian Water provides water and sewerage services to 2.6 million customers over 9,400km2, and produces an average of 800 million litres of drinking water every day. The principal water sources for Newcastle are Kielder and Catcleugh Reservoirs, and the River Tyne.Northumbrian Water has a statutory duty to prepare a Water Resources Management Plan (WRMP) under the Water Industry Act 1991. The plan outlines the company’s approach to maintain a long-term sustainable supply and demand balance for the supply of water in the North East. It also takes into account climate change implications, and the potential effects of changes in population.Given the level of water resources assured by the Kielder Reservoir, there is 100% security of supply in Newcastle for the foreseeable future. This means that sufficient raw water resources should be available under all probable circumstances. As a result, metering for demand management is not a priority, but NWL still looks to minimise consumption to reduce carbon emissions.Newcastle is predominantly supplied from Horsley and Whittle Dene water treatment works in the Tyne Valley which produce a combined average output of approximately 200 million litres of water per day. Both treatment works have similar process streams incorporating chemical coagulation, clarification, rapid gravity filtration, Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) and disinfection using chlorine. Water samples are analysed under regulations monitored by the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI). Water quality has been attested of being of extremely high standards for several decades now. Gradual increases in regional industrialised farming increased levels of pesticides in the local river catchments and raw water supply, meaning investment has been required to maintain water quality.NWL has worked closely with Ofwat and the Environment Agency (EA) to agree annual targets for water loss as we reach a Sustainable Economic Level of Leakage (the point where the marginal cost of saving an additional unit of water equals the marginal benefit derived from the water saved).07/16/2021 01:47:15

Description

This data is collected through the CDP-ICLEI Unified Reporting System. When using this data, please cite both organisations using the following wording: ‘This data was collected in partnership by CDP and ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability’.
This dataset contains the full responses of publicly disclosing cities in 2020. To view the complete cities 2020 questionnaire guidance, including all questions asked in 2020, visit https://www.cdp.net/en/guidance/guidance-for-cities. Please contact cities@cdp.net if you have any questions.
When using the inventory data for aggregation, comparison and trend analysis, please note that the inventory data is based on non-verified self-reported city inputs. The reported inventory may not include all emission sources within the city boundary.
Please note that this dataset may contain data from cities or, in some instances, groups of cities at different administrative levels. This includes metropolitan areas, combined authorities, and 5 American regional councils, which are: Chicago Metropolitan Mayors Caucus; Denver Regional Council of Governments; Metropolitan Council, Twin Cities; Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments; and Mid-America Regional Council.
