Se ubica en la costa Pacífica de Costa Rica. Su extensión territorial es de 543.77 km2 y está dividido en 3 distritos: Quepos, Savegre y Naranjito. Limita al Norte con los cantones de Tarrazú, Dota y Pérez Zeledón, al Oeste con Parrita, al Este con Osa y al Sur con el Océano Pacífico.La posición geográfica de Quepos al Sureste del país, tiene la protección al Norte de la cadena montañosa de la Fila Costera o Brunqueña que impide la incursión de vientos alisios del noreste, estableciéndose una modificación de régimen climático del Pacífico, un clima tropical con estación seca, con un periodo lluvioso muy severo y largo, y un periodo seco corto y moderado. El Pacífico Central presenta un tipo de clima lluvioso con influencia monzónica.Para el Pacífico Central y en las montañas aledañas, región donde se ubica el cantón de Quepos, se proyecta un aumento de lluvias hasta de un 15%. Las temperaturas podrían aumentar para toda la región, hasta 6°C en la máxima, mientras que en la mínima puede subir hasta 4 °C, según los escenarios para el año 2100. La topografía del cantón de Quepos es en su mayoría plana, que corresponde a llanura de origen aluvial. Al Norte y Este se encuentran dispuestas una serie de cerranías. Las cerranías del Norte son escarpadas y sobrepasan los 2.000 metros sobre el nivel del mar (m.s.n.m.).Quepos tiene una red fluvial bien definida, compuesta por cuatro cuencas Barú, Damas, Naranjo y Savegre.Es un cantón diverso pues cuenta con costa y montaña. En su territorio se ubica el Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio, tercer área silvestre protegida marino – costera más grande de Costa Rica y considerado como un remanente de humedales y bosque, que además es el parque más visitado del país.De acuerdo con el último Censo (INEC, 2011) en Quepos el 98,8 % de la población tiene acceso a electricidad, el 88,9% tiene acceso a agua y el 97,1 % cuenta con servicio sanitario. El 86,2% de la población tiene teléfono celular, un 43,9% tiene teléfono fijo, el 35,1% tiene computadora y solo el 22,8 % cuenta con servicio de internet. En cuanto a educación, el cantón cuenta con 36 escuelas públicas y 10 colegios, al menos 2 universidades una pública y una privada y 2 institutos parauniversitarios. De acuerdo con el censo (INEC, 2011) cuenta con 96,52% de Alfabetización, aunque solo el 13,6% de la población ha completado la secundaria, y un 12,7 % tiene estudios superiores. La deserción en secundaria alcanza el 50%. Respecto a agua potable y saneamiento, Quepos no cuenta con un sistema de alcantarillado, la mayoría de las viviendas tienen tanque séptico. La administración del servicio está a cargo de Asociaciones administradoras de Acueductos y Alcantarillados Comunales (ASADAS) y de organizaciones comunitarias administradoras de acueductos rurales (CAAR), 20 acueductos en total.Las principales actividades económicas son: producción agrícola e industria relacionada (palma aceitera), pesca, con el segundo puerto más importante del Pacífico Costarricense y un sector turistico en desarrollo vinculado a las playas, y al parque nacional más visitado del País, Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio (https://www.youtube.com/watchv=fZNwRR0alP8)Quepos cuenta con un 24,6% de hogares con jefatura femenina, un 23,6% de la población está debajo de la línea de pobreza y un 9,8% de los hogares viven en pobreza extrema. El 47,8% de la población tienen viviendas en buen estado contra un 13,59% en mal estado. El 16, 5% de la población trabajadora no cuenta con seguro.
