312939Cities 2020202043938The Executive Council, Govt of DubaiUnited Arab EmiratesMiddle EastClimate Hazards and VulnerabilityClimate Hazards2.2Please identify and describe the factors that most greatly affect your city’s ability to adapt to climate change and indicate how those factors either support or challenge this ability.4Please describe how the factor supports or challenges the adaptive capacity of your city2The natural and arid environment of the city poses certain challenges. The desert nature of the city causes a high concentration of air-borne particulate matters that are from natural sources. This impacts air quality, which when combined with the high temperatures experienced in Dubai render it very difficult to walk outside or use active mobility options over the case. The climate also leads to a high cooling demand which in turn is responsible for more than 50% of the energy consumption in the city.Extreme temperature, extreme precipitation, flooding, sandstorms, sea level rise and storm surges are likely to occur more frequently in the emirate due to climate change. These will impact the quality and reliability of marine, air and land transportation networks which in turn will impact all business segments in Dubai. These stress factors are also likely to impact the building and construction sector due to decreased resilience of construction materials, workers heat related health incidents, cost of delay and cost of building damage. The current vulnerability of coastal habitats and near shore seawater quality is high because of extensive coastal development and the on-going impact of bleaching and other thermal and acidification related impacts. The erosion of the shoreline in the coming decades will increase slowly as the sea level rises. If the storms become more intense or frequent or if wave directions shift then the erosion can become problematic. Without additional nourishments, increased erosion rates can lead to the (partial) disappearance of public and private beaches, which would negatively affect Dubai’s tourist industry and critical coastal infrastructure. As Dubai Coast is almost exclusively artificially constructed and managed, this has enabled the municipality and developers to design and implement a level of protection against flooding from the sea.07/16/2021 01:47:15
