O Concelho apresenta uma área de 212,99 km², na zona do barlavento algarvio e encontra-se subdividido em 4 freguesias: União de freguesias de Bensafrim e Barão de São João, São Gonçalo de Lagos, Luz e Odiáxere. O Concelho é limitado a norte pelo Concelho de Monchique, a leste por Portimão, a oeste por Vila do Bispo, a noroeste por Aljezur e a sul tem litoral no oceano Atlântico. À semelhança de várias localidades costeiras, Lagos sempre teve uma grande proximidade com o mar e, desde tempos muito distantes, a pesca foi a atividade mais importante e uma das únicas fontes de rendimento para a população (essa atividade sobrevive, embora sem a importância de outrora). A partir da década de 1960, a principal atividade económica passou a ser o turismo, incentivado pelas praias e clima atrativos, uma costa única (denominada como costa D'Oiro, devido à cor quase dourada das rochas), a gastronomia e o património histórico de exceção e vida noturna de grande dinamismo. Hoje em dia, Lagos é uma das cidades algarvias mais procuradas pelas suas praias de areia dourada e águas cristalinas, pela beleza paisagística da sua baía e pelo seu legado arquitetónico. Fechada nas suas muralhas, Lagos é um dos abrigos mais acolhedores da costa portuguesa. As muralhas (monumento nacional), edificadas nos reinados de D. Manuel I, D. João II e D. Filipe I, envolviam completamente a cidade para a defender da pirataria e das frotas hostis. As suas ruas estreitas denunciam um passado feito de mistério e de descobrimentos ornados a ouro e a marfim. Quase todas conduzem a agradáveis praças e jardins, algumas com esplanadas que permitem usufruir da mística atmosfera que envolve a cidade. A brancura do casario não passa despercebida. Revela a busca constante por ambientes mais frescos. As casas algarvias, em muito influenciadas pelas técnicas trazidas de África, apresentam vulgarmente barras coloridas que emolduram portas e janelas. As chaminés, de configurações e cores variadas, foram uma das mais populares formas de artesanato. When using the inventory data for aggregation, comparison and trend analysis, please note that the inventory data is based on non-verified self-reported city inputs. The reported inventory may not include all emission sources within the city boundary.
