322239Cities 2020202054519City of LundSwedenEuropeIntroduction0.1Please give a general description and introduction to your city including your city’s reporting boundary in the table below.2Description of city1Please completeLund is one of Scandinavia’s oldest towns. Its university is ranked among the leading universities in the world. Lund is the place where tradition and innovation meet, where distances are short, and research among the world’s best. Lund was founded in 990 AC by the Danish king Sweyn Forkbeard, probably as a relocation of the Iron age settlement of Uppåkra. Written sources indicate that the village known today as Uppåkra then was called Lund. Today, Lund is Sweden’s 12th biggest municipality with about 125000 inhabitants, 19,5 per cent of which were born abroad. The population has increased steadily since the 1920’s. Half of the population of Lund has pursued post-secondary education. The biggest employers in Lund are the Skåne University Hospital, Lund University, and the City of Lund. Lund university was founded in 1666. It has for the past years been ranked as one of the top 100 universities in the world. With its 40 000 full time students and thousands of researchers from all over the world the university shapes the town and its character. Five billion Swedish crowns are annually distributed for research within eight faculties. Hence it is Lund University that offers one of Sweden’s strongest and broadest research base. More than 30 of the research areas of Lund university are considered as leading in their field globally. The artificial kidney, the ultrasound, the pacemaker and Bluetooth technology are all examples of innovations that have sprung from Lund and Lund University. They all opened new doors for millions of people worldwide. World-leading companies like Tetra Pak, Axis Communications and Alfa Laval have their origin in research from Lund University, and new ones keep to start up. Towards the north east, a new part of town is being built - Brunnshög. Here, the research facilities MAX IV and ESS will lay the ground for world class materials research. Lund was awarded Best in Sweden in sustainable transport solutions in 2019 and Sweden’s best Cycling Town in 2017.For years Lund has been top of the Eco Food League as 65per cent of the municipality’s purchase were organic in 2017 or example. In 2016, Lund won the Skåne Solar Award.A rich cultural life and plenty of sights make Lund an attractive destination. The Lund cathedral alone draws more than 700 000 visitors each year. Other favourite spots are Skissernas Museum (Museum of Artistic Process and Public Art), Lunds konsthall , the outdoor museum Kulturen, and the Science Centre Vattenhallen. In Dalby awaits you the Holy Cross Church which is more than 1000 years old.Lund is the home of many festivals, conferences, and annually returning events such as the Nordic Youth Orchestras, Lund Choral Festival, Lund Comedy Festival, Thomanders Christmas, Innovation in Mind, and Fantasy Film Festival. The annual culture night Kulturnatten is in high demand each September. Every year thousands of young people gather spontaneously in the City park to celebrate Walpurgis night. For lots of people, Lund is strongly connected to handball, with the biggest teams being Lugi and H43. Lundaspelen, a big annual international basket- and handball tournament, build on this tradition. Lund is part of the Öresund region, one of Europe’s expansive regions. About four million people live here. From Lund you can reach Malmö in 10 minutes and central Copenhagen in 45 minutes.07/16/2021 01:47:15
