Stringent level 6b water restrictions were put in place to reduce demand, in conjunction with other demand-side management interventions such as pressure reduction and leaks repairs. This was successful in ensuring that water supplies did not run out in 2018. It is anticipated that in the longer term, water demand will continue to grow and place stress on the supply system. The City is currently conducting cooperative planning with the national Department of Water and Sanitation to ensure that additional water supply infrastructure is constructed to avoid a long-term water deficit in the region, while also looking at options for increasing water supply through alternative sources within the City’s control. Climate change is projected to significantly reduce rainfall in the mid and far future periods, and this has been included as a scenario in the planning for future infrastructure. Climate change will also lead to increased evaporation and increased demand due to higher temperatures. The region is known to experience droughts and climate change is likely to make these more intense and frequent. | 07/16/2021 01:47:15 | |||
