El crecimiento del área urbana ha sido acelerado sobre todo a partir de la década de los noventa. Durante el periodo de 1970 a 2005 el ritmo de expansión hizo que la ciudad creciera de 3,815 ha. a 19,024 ha. El crecimiento de la población acompañado de un muy acelerado incremento en las dimensiones del área urbana, dio como resultado un patrón de localización disperso, condición que se corrobora con claridad al observar cifras del comportamiento de la densidad de población; indicador que pasó de 67.35 habitantes/ha. en 1970 a casi la mitad en el año 2005 (37.51 habitantes/ha.) . Esta dispersión se traduce en la falta de consolidación urbana y la existencia de grandes espacios vacíos al interior de la ciudad, condición que se calcula asciende al 15 % del área urbana total, es decir, poco más de 3 mil 900 hectáreas. Este modelo de desarrollo disperso, trae consigo altos costos e ineficiencia en el funcionamiento de los diferentes sistemas urbanos (movilidad, equipamiento, infraestructura, espacio público, entre otros) y repercute de manera directa en el incremento de consumo de combustibles fósiles utilizados para el transporte y la prestación de los servicios públicos, así como en el cambio de uso de suelo de reserva ecológica a urbano07/16/2021 01:47:15
