Comprende una superficie de 682,20 km² y sucabecera es la homónima ciudad de Cañas. Posee una población de 26 201 habitantes, su economía sebasa en dos grandes áreas: el cultivo de la caña de azúcar y la producción de tilapias, además cuenta coneconomías más pequeñas como son la ganadería, el cultivo de arroz y algodón, y la actividad turística,aunque esta última a menor escala y funciona más bien dentro del ámbito de turismo rural (Instituto deDesarrollo Rural, 2016).El cantón cuenta con diversos recursos naturales, tales como: el refugio de vida silvestre Cipancícompartido con Nicoya, parte del Parque Nacional Palo Verde, parte del Parque Nacional Volcán Tenorio,el humedal Río Cañas (integra también el área de protección Tempisque), Cañas es propenso a diversas amenazas como inundaciones, provocadas por los ríos Cañas, Corobicí, Higuerón y Cedros, así como a sequías, especialmente en el Distrito de riego Arenal-Tempisque, en comunidades de Porozal, en zonas de agrícolas de secano y en zonas ganaderas. Además, está divido administrativamente en 5 distritos y 100 poblados (INEC 2011). En cuanto al clima, Cañas se encuentra en la zona climática denominada Pacífico Norte y forma parte delcorredor seco extendido en el centro del país a través de la depresión del rio Grande de Tárcoles. Tiene unperiodo seco que va de diciembre a marzo, abril es un mes de transición. Asimismo, cuenta con el periodode lluvias, que va de mayo a octubre, noviembre es un mes de transición. Entre julio y agosto, gracias a losvientos alisios, se produce una canícula o veranillo. Durante el periodo seco precipita únicamente un 4% del total de lluvias del año, en el periodo de lluvias, un 50% del total de estas y luego, de septiembre a noviembre, ocurre el segundo periodo lluvioso durante el cual precipita el restante 46% de las lluvias. Se manifiestan dos estaciones marcadas con temperaturas que oscilan entre los 22 Co por la noche y los 37 Co durante el día (IMN, s.f).En el cantón de Cañas las dinámicas de los grupos de edades por género se consideran similares entre sí. Como datos relevantes se observa que el 56% de la población se encuentra entre los 0 y los 29 años, alcanzando 14 422 personas. En cuanto a los grupos de edad de adultez y adulto mayor, éstos alcanzan 9 327 personas (35%) y 2 452 personas (9%) respectivamente. Esta situación señala que el cantón tiene en su mayoría población joven y muy bajos porcentajes de población adulta.07/16/2021 01:47:15
