Situa-se na Microrregião de Petrolina e na Mesorregião do São Francisco Pernambucano, distante 712 km a oeste de Recife, capital estadual. Possui uma extensão territorial de 4 561,872 km², estando 244,8 km² em perímetro urbano e os 4 317,072 km² restantes integrando a zona rural. Segundo dados do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística, em 2017 sua população foi estimada em 343 219 habitantes, sendo o quinto maior município de Pernambuco e o segundo do interior pernambucano, atrás apenas de Caruaru. O município é integrante da Região Administrativa Integrada de Desenvolvimento do Polo Petrolina e Juazeiro. Em conjunto com Juazeiro formam a segunda maior conurbação do interior do Nordeste depois de Feira de Santana.O município tem uma temperatura média anual de 34,5 °C, tendo a caatinga como sua vegetação nativa e predominante. Com uma taxa de urbanização de 74,57 %, no ano de 2009 o município possuía 141 estabelecimentos de saúde. Em 2010, sua Índice de Desenvolvimento Humano (IDH-M) era de 0,697, considerado médio e acima da média pernambucana, ocupando o sexto lugar no ranking estadual. Sua RIDE é formada por oito municípios, que totalizam uma população de cerca de 700 mil habitantes.Petrolina foi fundada em 1870. A sua região era frequentada assiduamente pelo capuchinho italiano frei Henrique, que realizava intensas prédicas missionárias pelos povoados ribeirinhos do Rio São Francisco. Em uma delas, o frei resolveu construir uma capela dedicada à Nossa Senhora Rainha dos Anjos, sendo a partir dessa construção que houve o crescimento populacional na região em que se localiza a sede municipal.Por volta da década de 1980, foram surgindo suas primeiras vinícolas irrigadas pelas águas do São Francisco, com isso, indústrias relacionadas à produção de vinho foram aparecendo.Atualmente, o município é constituído por três distritos, além da sua sede, sendo subdividida em 5 regiões com vários bairros.Sexto município mais rico de Pernambuco, Petrolina foi apontada como uma das 20 cidades brasileiras do futuro na edição 2180 da Revista Veja, do dia 01 de setembro de 2010. Com o melhor índice de saneamento básico do Nordeste, Petrolina conta com 95% de coleta de esgoto e 100% de tratamento do que é coletado. Petrolina foi reconhecida como a maior rede hoteleira da região turística do sertão do São Francisco e do Pajeú, contando com 2.115 leitos, distribuídos em 24 hotéis; diversos restaurantes, bares, centros comerciais, hospitais, Universidades e cursos de Turismo em níveis técnico e superior, segundo um estudo de competitividade realizado pelo Ministério do Turismo, Fundação Getúlio Vargas e o Sebrae Nacional.07/16/2021 01:47:15
