The Town is working to achieve this goal and currently updating this strategic plan and will have more ambitious goals. Town of Vail partners with Walking Mountains Science Center and Energy Smart Colorado to provide free energy audits to residents and businesses in Vail and offers double rebates for energy efficiency work completed as a result of the audits, which is up to $1,000 for residential and $2,000 for business energy upgrades. To date, an estimated 2,047 metric tons of CO2e have been reduced due to energy efficiency upgrades. Currently the Town of Vail is working with the Eagle County Climate Action Collaborative to work on adoption of above building code regulations around energy efficiency. The Town also hosted an LED Swap to encourage residents to change less efficient light bulbs in their homes with more efficient LED bulbs. The Town completed energy upgrades in all municipal buildings, including retrofitting all buildings and outdoor structures and fixtures with LED light bulbs. Town of Vail is also working to increase alternative fuels into operations as much as possible from electricity, heating and fleet fuels. For instance, recycled motor oil is utilized to heat the fleet maintenance garage. A Building Operating System through Lucid Technologies was implemented to monitor energy and water usage and identify excessive use in order to troubleshoot issues. The Town of Vail is also working with the Climate Action Collaborative on a B3 Building Benchmarking system as well to help improve energy efficiency.07/16/2021 01:47:15

This goal has been achieved and the Town is currently updating this stratgic plan to have more ambitous goals. Town of Vail is also committed to Waste Reduction goals established in the Climate Action Plan for Eagle County including a 30% reduction in landfill contributions by 2030. Initiatives include a Town wide ordinance that requires all businesses and residents to recycle by law which was enacted in 2014. The ordinance also includes a Pay as You Throw program and requires hauler registration and reporting requirements. In addition, there is a free recycling drop site located at the Town Community Development building that takes commingled, paper, and cardboard items. The Town of Vail provides composting in municipal buildings and allows all Town employees to utilize the compost for personal composting needs. Town of Vail partnered with a local compost facility to offer a subscription compost program to residents and businesses. All events held in Vail are required to provide Zero Waste services at the events including recycling. Any event receiving funding from the town and all other events with over 1,000 attendees that are serving food and/or beverages must also compost at the event. The Town implemented the "Kick the Bag Habit" program, a ban on plastic bags at the grocery stores to encourage use of reusable bags. Paper bags are available for $0.10 per bag. These funds come back to the Town of Vail and are used for recycling programs, including hosting two Hard to Recycle events per year. The events are free for Vail residents, employees in Vail, and homeowners, and collects household hazardous waste and electronics waste to be recycled. A paper shredding service is also available at the events for the community to utilize. Additionally, recycling education and outreach programs are ongoing both internally within municipal operations as well as for local students, residents, and businesses. In 2020, a recycled art installation was commissioned to teach the importance of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and reducing usage of single use plastics. The Town of Vail also offers the Business Recycling Challenge to provide businesses with support and resources to improve recycling efforts.07/16/2021 01:47:15
