Rents in New Orleans have risen by over 50% since Hurricane Katrina. A majority of renter households (61.9%) are cost-burdened, which is defined aspaying more than 30% of monthly income on housing costs (rent plus utilities). Housing stock is also generally old and not well insulated, making residents more vulnerable to extreme heat and cold events and more dependent on energy use for cooling than many other parts of the country. Weatherization of homes is a priority, but not as widely implemented as it could be, largely due to financial constraints.07/16/2021 01:47:15
