O PDMB foi atualizado em finais de maio de 2019 tendo havido um reforço dos objetivos para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável do território. Relativamente a temas ambientais o PDMB incorpora as metas dos planos supramunicipais através do procedimento de Avaliação Ambiental Estratégica. Neste sentido, e no que diz respeito às metas da Gestão da Água o PDMB pretende:- proteger e requalificar o estado dos ecossistemas aquáticos e dos ecossistemas terrestres, bem como das zonas húmidas que deles dependem, no que respeita às suas necessidades de água;- promover o uso sustentável, equilibrado e equitativo de água de boa qualidade, com a afetação aos vários tipos de usos, tendo em conta o seu valor económico, baseada numa proteção a longo prazo dos recursos hídricos disponíveis;- aumentar da resiliência relativamente aos efeitos das inundações e das secas e outros fenómenos meteorológicos extremos decorrentes das alterações climáticas. Estes objetivos estratégicos para a água tem por base o Plano Nacional da Água que define a estratégia nacional para a gestão integrada da água.
