The climate is relatively dry with roughly 360 mm of rain in the summer and 110 mm of precipitation, and 125 cm of snowfall in the winter. As one of Canada’s sunniest cities, with 2,300 hours of sunshine per year Edmonton’s summer temperature average from 7 C to 22 C and winter range from -5 C to -30 C. As of 2015, Edmonton proved to be Canada’s fastest growing and youngest major city, with almost 900,000 people calling it home, making it Alberta's second-largest city and Canada's fifth-largest municipality. The metropolitan population well exceeds one million people and continues to grow. An important gateway to Canada’s North, Edmonton is the farthest north of Canada's large cities and has important road, rail and air transportation links. From its beginnings as a Hudson's Bay Company fur trading fort, Edmonton has evolved into a diverse, cosmopolitan city with a wide range of cultural, sporting and tourist attractions and a high quality of life for its citizens. Most of Edmonton's population works in the service and trade industries and the government sector. Edmonton is the major economic centre for northern and central Alberta and a large part of Canada’s North. As of April 2016, the estimated value of major projects within the Edmonton Capital Region was $62.4 billion, of which $34.1 billion are within the oil and gas, oil sands and pipeline sectors. Edmonton is known as one of Canada’s premier research and education centres anchored by leading educational institutions such as the University of Alberta as well as government initiatives underway at the Alberta Innovates Technology Futures Centre, and Edmonton Research Park. Edmonton is a cultural, governmental and educational centre hosting a year-round slate of festivals and international sporting events. It is home to Rogers Place, Canada’s newest and most technologically advanced sporting and entertainment centre, North America's largest mall, West Edmonton Mall, the longest stretch of connected urban parkland in North America and Fort Edmonton Park, Canada's largest living history museum.07/16/2021 01:47:15
