All biodegradable waste from homes and industries in the area is converted by composting into high nutrient soil. This product can be packed and sold to small retail market and reduces the need for import of soil. Growing awareness and increased demand for green (climate neutral) goods and services may lead to an increase in clean technology businesses. This effect is strengthened as Akureyri has already invested in pilot projects that will most likely give competitive advantages (= shorter response time to new requirements). The local government has been supporting this development by assisting startup companies, such as in production of bio-diesel, bio-methane and plastic recovery, as well as by setting a procurement policy towards environmental friendly products.07/16/2021 01:47:15
