The Governing Mayor of Berlin simultaneously serves as the city's mayor and prime minister. The Senators are both state ministers and heads of local departments. The unified municipality of Berlin is a decentralised body divided into 12 city districts of different sizes. These districts take care of political decisions on the local level and administrative matters. Unlike independent municipalities, however, they do not have financial autonomy, but are allocated funds by the Berlin government, called the Senate. Like other urban areas worldwide, Berlin is a fast-growing city. The current population of 3.6 million (2018) will have grown to 3.8 million by 2030. Berlin is a pluricultural city: its inhabitants come from over 184 countries. Berlin covers an area of 343 square miles (891 square kilometres). It is located in a landscape of forests, parks and lakes which cover almost 40 % of the city’s surface area. There are also 122 miles of navigable waterways in the city. It is located in the temperate climate zone between maritime and continental climate. The average annual temperature is 9.5 °C. Berlin’s GDP is € 153 billion (2019). Berlin is experiencing an above-average level of economic growth (+3 percent in 2019 compared to 2018). Unemployment rate with 7.8 percent (2019) is decreasing. The quality of life in the city is often considered as above average. Berlin is the cultural centre of Germany and attracts a wide range of creative talents. There is a wide university and research landscape which attracts a lot of academics. Living costs are still considerably low, with an increasing tendency. The public transport system is remarkable. Amongst other things, Berlin’s citizens benefit from the largest underground network in Germany. The motorisation rate (324 cars/1000 residents) is under the German average (538/1000); more than 40 percent of all households own no car. | 07/16/2021 01:47:15 | |||
