| 177386 | Cities 2020 | 2020 | 50154 | City of Turku | Finland | Europe | Introduction | 0.1 | Please give a general description and introduction to your city including your city’s reporting boundary in the table below. | 2 | Description of city | 1 | Please complete | Turku is a middle-sized (193 000 inhabitants) coastal city located in southwestern Finland. It is a regional capital of the third largest urban area in Finland, the oldest city of Finland, and an important business and cultural centre. Several universities in the heart of Turku are significant hubs for learning, research and knowledge-intensive development. We are proud of our active universities and the heritage of highest education that originates from the middle ages. We appreciate research and scientific knowledge – and we listen to science and act accordingly!Turku was selected as the best mid-sized climate city in 2020 (European Covenant of Mayors Award). Award is a recognition of a long-term climate work that has been done in the region in cooperation with various stakeholders. Turku has been implementing the Climate Strategy for ten years and the City Council has agreed on the climate goals unanimously. Turku has already transformed the energy system from fossils to renewables and promotes sustainable transport and urban development. The greenhouse gas emissions will be cut by nearly half till end of the year 2021 from the level of 1990. During the same time the economy of the region has grown steadily. The city of Turku has a very ambitious climate plan to be a carbon-neutral area by the year 2029. However, city’s climate ambition is not stopping there. After 2029 Turku will be one of the first climate positive areas in the world meaning that the region will be storing more carbon than emitting. In order to reach the climate positivity, inventing new innovative ways of storing carbon are necessary – currently the city is increasing the green areas and developing a local compensation business model to meet the challenge. In Turku circular economy and resource wisdom are strongly emphasized to support the climate action. Turku is the first city linking the circular economy to its climate plan to help address greenhouse gas emissions in a systemic manner and beyond its jurisdictional boundaries. In order to create a circular economy transition, Turku is cooperating with local citizens, innovators, universities and businesses to co-create a Circular Economy roadmap for the Turku region that will be ready by February 2021. It consists of major circular economy interventions that are a combination of ambitious targets and concrete call for collaboration of local actors. The priority themes of the roadmap are water, energy systems, transportation and logistics, buildings and construction, and food. The work is done in close collaboration with international city network ICLEI and Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra. Circular economy transition utilizes best available scientific knowledge and co-creation with partners and seeks to mobilize the whole civic society. Turku aims to be a frontrunner in circular economy and climate action. This also creates better everyday life for the citizens. Climate solutions have many important benefits such as healthier living environment, greener urban areas, clean air and water, and functioning ecosystems to mitigate the risks of the climate change. Transition to circular economy creates new business opportunities, jobs and wellbeing for the whole region. Climate change is a global challenge – this is why Turku is seeking climate solutions together with others. Turku is committed to Covenant of Mayors, reports annually through CDP, is an active member of ICLEI and contributes to several international sustainable development projects, partnerships and events. | Districts of Turku.jpg | 07/16/2021 01:47:15 | ||
