Coventry is believed to have been established in 1043 with the founding of a Benedictine Abbey by the Earl of Mercia, Leofric, and his wife Lady Godiva and became a centre for textiles trades and dyers who produced the “Coventry blue” cloth. More recently, the city was subjected to a sustained heavy bombing campaign during World War 2 which left much of the City Centre and the city’s medieval cathedral destroyed. Following extensive rebuilding, the city prospered, often being referred to as the ‘Motor City’ owing to a large concentration of car production and manufacturing plants spread throughout the city, even today, 10% of all UK automotive jobs are in Coventry and Warwickshire. The city’s character is one that is predominantly urban and covers an area of approximately 9,980 ha. The urban character of the city is tightly constrained and is bounded by the Warwickshire and West Midland Green Belts. There are two main principle rivers across Coventry – the River Sowe which drains the eastern side of the city and the River Sherbourne, the principal river running through Coventry with an 8-10km length upstream of the city centre where it is culverted for approximately 1.7km.07/16/2021 01:47:15
