Está a orillas del Océano Pacifico en la bahía El Ferrol, en la desembocadura del río Lacramarca, al Norte de Lima y forma un conglomerado urbano con el área urbana del distrito de Nuevo Chimbote (Buenos Aires), que en conjunto forman una ciudad con aproximadamente 350,000 habitantes. El clima de la ciudad es árido sin precipitación regular en el año, semicálido-húmedo. Los veranos con cortos, calientes y los inviernos son largos, frescos, secos y parcialmente nublados. Durante el transcurso del año, la temperatura generalmente varía de 15°C a 24°C y rara vez baja a menos de 13°C o sube más de 27°C. Los vientos son constantes casi todo el año con dirección suroeste.El relieve tipográfico de la ciudad es suave y uniforme; se inicia desde la orilla del mar hasta alcanzar la máxima altura al norte del distrito de Chimbote (150 m.s.n.m.). En Nuevo Chimbote, la ciudad se desarrolla entre la cota 10 m.s.n.m. en la margen izquierda del río Lacramarca hasta la cota 50 m.s.n.m. al Sur Este hasta las proximidades del Cerro Médano Negro (300 m.s.n.m.). En la divisoria de ambos distritos el relieve topográfico presenta una ligera depresión por la cual discurre el río Lacramarca.La dinámica poblacional de la ciudad refleja un activo desarrollo de comercio diversificado, llegando a interactuar con diferentes ciudades cercanas como Lima (capital del Perú), Huaraz (capital de región o departamento), Trujillo, Chiclayo y Piura.Su economía se basó principalmente en la actividad industrial de la pesca y siderúrgica, pero que ha venido disminuyendo en el tiempo, dando paso a otras actividades económicas como el comercio y servicios, además de una incipiente actividad agroindustrial que se hará realidad cuando se implemente el proyecto irrigador de CHINECAS.Su localización en la costa peruana y sobre la Carretera Panamericana, hace que se conecte a nivel nacional a lo largo de la costa peruana y de América del Sur, formando parte del Eje Andino de Integración y Desarrollo - IRRSA.La ciudad presenta unos humedales que son irrigados por el Río Lacramarca.
