195659Cities 2020202035993Singapore GovernmentSingaporeSoutheast Asia and OceaniaIntroduction0.1Please give a general description and introduction to your city including your city’s reporting boundary in the table below.2Description of city1Please completeSingapore is a small, low-lying city-state with a land area of 724.2 km2. With a population of 5.64 million in 2018, it is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. Our lack of a hinterland means that we have to accommodate not just housing and commercial centres, but also power plants, reservoirs, air & seaports and industries within our city boundaries. We face significant constraints in switching to alternative or renewable energy sources, such as geothermal, wind or hydropower. Although Singapore is located in the tropics, there are also challenges to harnessing solar energy in a significant way, given our small land area and dense urban landscape. We have to import 97.7% of our energy needs, resulting in a high dependency on fossil fuels.Since the early 2000s, Singapore has switched from fuel oil to natural gas for power generation. The proportion of Singapore’s electricity generated by natural gas has risen from 19% in 2000 to 95.0% in 2018. This switch in fuel mix has helped to reduce emissions growth. In addition, energy is priced to reflect market cost (i.e. unsubsidised) to encourage households and businesses to use energy prudently.Singapore is an export-oriented economy that is highly dependent on international trade. In 2018, in nominal terms, Singapore’s external merchandise trade amounted to S$1.05 trillion, about 2.15 times the GDP of Singapore (S$487 billion). As our domestic market is small, the bulk of our industries manufacturing products for export rather than local consumption. For example, Singapore is one of the five largest export refining centres in the world, and our three refineries produce primarily for global export. Singapore’s strategic geographical location has also enabled it to develop into a major air and sea transport hub.07/16/2021 01:47:15
