While drawing on the CCRA where there is regional or local information (which at times is limited due to lack of data) this pack presents a local perspective of the CCRA risks and opportunities. The pack offers an illustration of what climate change means for people, businesses, community groups, local authorities, and other organisations across key sectors, at the local level, highlighting what is alreadyhappening and where there is a strong case for greater local action. The research reveals that without action we could see:-- Increases in the frequency of flooding affecting people’s homes and wellbeing, especially for vulnerable groups (e.g. those affected by poverty, older people, people in poor health and those with disabilities), and the operation of businesses and critical infrastructure systems. Annual damage to properties in England and Wales, due to flooding from rivers and the sea, rises from £1.2 billion to between £2.1 billion and £12 billion by the 2080s. Without action, a range of important infrastructure such as roads and railways may be affected by a significantly increased risk of flooding based on future population growth and if no adaptive action is taken.- Summer overheating potentially contributing to heat-related health problems. Premature deaths due to hotter summers are projected to increase (e.g. by between 580 and 5900 by the 2050s). This is likely to place different burdens on National Health Service (NHS), public health and social care services. Other health risks that may increase include problems caused by ground-level ozone and by marine and freshwater pathogens.- Reductions in water availability, particularly during the summer, leading to more frequent water use restrictions and, in the longer term, water shortages. The gap between demand and availability will potentially widen, impacting homes, businesses, chools and hospitals. By the 2050s, between 27 million and 59 million people in the UK may be living in areas affected by water supply-demand deficits (based on existing population levels). Adaptation action will be needed to increase water efficiency across all sectors and decrease levels of water abstraction in the summer months. | 07/16/2021 01:47:15 | |||

The assessment included a workshop, that participated city administration from different departments as well as the most relevant stakeholders. In this workshop and during reporting, three most relevant climate risks were recognized: Floods, extreme rain and extreme heat. The workshop also evaluated factors affecting climate vulnerability. For the the three major risks, recognized vulnerabilities were Espoos location in the coastline and rapid population development (floods), dense city structure and clay soils (extreme rain), increased portion of elderly in the population and old building stock (extreme heat). Vulnerabilities were also evaluated for other risks in the report.The current state and future challenges of climate change vulnerability in Espoo have also been assessed as part of Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority's report "New challenges of adaptation to climate change in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area" that was published in September 2017. As the name implies, the report focuses on adaptation, but it also strengthens understanding of climate change and its impacts, including the effects on vulnerability in the region. In addition, Espoo is included in the Helsinki Metropolitan area climate change adaptation strategy 2012-2020 that takes into consideration risks and vulnerabilities caused by climate change in the region. The strategy compiles measures and policies with which the metropolitan area prepares for the consequences of climate change. Social vulnerability to climate change in the Metropolitan Area of Helsinki, including Espoo, is dealt in detail in a separate report. Also, the changes in natural condition in Espoo and larger Helsinki Metropolitan area due climate change are dealt in a report by Finnish Meteorological Institute. When using the inventory data for aggregation, comparison and trend analysis, please note that the inventory data is based on non-verified self-reported city inputs. The reported inventory may not include all emission sources within the city boundary.
Please note that this dataset may contain data from cities or, in some instances, groups of cities at different administrative levels. This includes metropolitan areas, combined authorities, and 5 American regional councils, which are: Chicago Metropolitan Mayors Caucus; Denver Regional Council of Governments; Metropolitan Council, Twin Cities; Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments; and Mid-America Regional Council.
