It is located within the Attica Basin, which is surrounded by four mountains; Egaleo to the west, Parnitha to the north, Penteli to the northeast and Hymettus to the east. The southern boundary leads to the sea, the Saronic Gulf. The geomorphology of the Athenian Urban Area is quite complex, from an environmental point of view, due to the surrounding mountains, which cause a temperature inversion phenomenon. Athens has a subtropical Mediterranean climate characterised by prolonged hot and dry summers and mild winters with moderate rainfall. With an average annual precipitation of 414.1mm, rainfall occurs mostly during the period of October to April. The annual mean temperature is estimated at 17.5oC. Athens holds the WMO record for the highest temperature ever recorded in Europe (48.0°C in 1987). It has higher energy needs for cooling than for heating; Cooling Degree Days for Athens are 5564 [base temperature: 26oC], while its Heating Degree Days are 1188 [base temperature: 18oC]. Air pollution incidents are quite common, especially during summer months, as well as photochemical smog. Athens is affected by the UHI effect, which bears a negative impact on energy use, especially on cooling demand, thermal comfort in public spaces and the inhabitants’ health.The administrative limits of the City of Athens occupy an area of 39km2. Permanent residents have been recorded as 664,046 (2011 Census); the Athenian population has declined by 16% since 2001. Nonetheless, the Athenian Metropolitan Area, which includes Athens, Piraeus and 38 other Municipalities, has approximately 2.7 million residents and occupies an area of 412km2.The City of Athens belongs to the Region of Attica. The Mayor and the City Council govern Cities, while a Regional Governor and a Council govern Regions. Local elections take place every 4 years. According to 2017 data of the Hellenic Statistical Authority, the GDP per capita for Athens is 33,002€, while for the Region of Attica is 22,784€ and 16,757€ for the whole country. Tourism is one of the main economic activities within the City and has increased recently; the service sector (real estate, education, hotels/restaurants, health services, wholesale and retail trade) represents approximately 65% of the GVA of the City of Athens. | 07/16/2021 01:47:15 | |||

When using the inventory data for aggregation, comparison and trend analysis, please note that the inventory data is based on non-verified self-reported city inputs. The reported inventory may not include all emission sources within the city boundary.
Please note that this dataset may contain data from cities or, in some instances, groups of cities at different administrative levels. This includes metropolitan areas, combined authorities, and 5 American regional councils, which are: Chicago Metropolitan Mayors Caucus; Denver Regional Council of Governments; Metropolitan Council, Twin Cities; Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments; and Mid-America Regional Council.
