It is located in the center west of Colombia, in the Paisa region, on the Central Mountain Range of the Andes, near the Nevado del Ruiz. It has a population of approximately 398,874 inhabitants according to the official demographic projections for the year 2017; its metropolitan area formed by the municipalities of Manizales, Neira, Chinchiná, Villamaría and Palestina reaches a population of around 557,060 inhabitants, and is also known as the Centrosur de Caldas subregion. It is part, along with Risaralda, Quindío, the northwest of Tolima, the North of the Valley and the Antioquia southwest of the Colombian coffee axis.Founded in 1849 by Antioqueno settlers, today it is a city with economic, industrial, cultural and tourist activities.7 Of its cultural activity, the Manizales Fair, the Manizales International Theater Festival, is the most important theater city in the country. the history of Colombia, and the Manizales Festival Cries Rock.As the capital of the department, Manizales hosts the headquarters of the Governorate of Caldas, the Departmental Assembly, the Administrative Court of Caldas, the General Prosecutor's Office of the Nation, as well as different public companies and institutions and state agencies.Manizales is called the "City of Open Doors". The relief of the city is especially mountainous. Near Manizales, is the Nevado del Ruiz, with a height of 5,321 meters above sea level. Due to its geographical location, in Manizales you can enjoy diverse landscapes, such as snow-capped mountains, volcanoes, forests, mountains and valleys. This includes metropolitan areas, combined authorities, and 5 American regional councils, which are: Chicago Metropolitan Mayors Caucus; Denver Regional Council of Governments; Metropolitan Council, Twin Cities; Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments; and Mid-America Regional Council.
