O seu aniversário é no dia 30 de Junho e sua fundação, em 2 de setembro de 1893. O seu gentílico é guarujaense. A população é estimada em 318.107 habitantes (IBGE, 2018), sendo que 52,26 % são moradores do Distrito de Vicente de Carvalho e 51,3%, do total de seus munícipes, é composto por mulheres. Ainda, 40,1 % de sua população está na faixa dos 30 aos 59 anos, demonstrando a existência de uma força de mão de obra economicamente ativa.Possui a 22.ª maior população do Estado de São Paulo, a terceira mais populosa do litoral paulista, ficando atrás apenas de São Vicente e Santos.Possui indicadores econômicos bastante significativos: o PIB é de quase 8,2 bilhões de reais (IBGE, 2015), sendo que a maior parte provém da área de prestação de serviços. O orçamento aprovado pela Câmara Municipal de Guarujá para o exercício de 2019 é de 1,5 bilhão de reais. O total de população residente em domicílios particulares ocupados em assentamentos subnormais é de 95.427 pessoas (IBGE, 2010), ou seja, 32,8 % da população vive em urbanizados mas não urbanificados - favelas ou em ocupações irregulares de áreas de relevante interesse ecológico, como, por exemplo, os manguezais, e, ainda, em locais de alto risco de escorregamento, como as encostas de morros, existentes na cidade, passíveis de desencadear gravíssimos problemas de defesa civil, com perdas de vida e patrimônio. Guarujá é um município extremamente diverso, contudo, padece em algumas áreas nevrálgicas, como a bem-estar social e moradia. O seu Índice de Desenvolvimento Humano Municipal, ou IDHM, é de 0,751 (IBGE, 2010), ou seja, a 526º posição no ranking nacional e considerado de alto desenvolvimento. No caso da incidência da pobreza corresponde a 22,46% dos seus moradores (IBGE, 2010). A ilha está destacada do continente pelo Canal de Bertioga, pelo Estuário de Santos e Ilha de São Vicente. É a terceira maior ilha do litoral do Estado de São Paulo. Possui uma área de 143,58 km², o que resulta numa densidade demográfica de 2.197,87 hab/km². Dista 86 km da capital. Guarujá é um dos quinze municípios paulistas considerados estâncias balneárias pelo estado de São Paulo, por cumprirem determinados pré-requisitos definidos por Lei Estadual. Tal status garante a esses municípios uma verba maior por parte do Estado para a promoção do turismo regional. Também, o município adquire o direito de agregar junto a seu nome o título de estância balneária, termo pelo qual passa a ser designado tanto pelo expediente municipal oficial quanto pelas referências estaduais. Atualmente, a cidade de Guarujá é conhecida como a "Pérola do Atlântico", devido às suas belas praias e belezas naturais. A cidade dispõe de um conjunto de 27 praias, sejam isoladas e acessíveis apenas por trilha ou barco, e outras em áreas urbanizadas. Além do litoral, oferece construções históricas e trilhas de ecoturismo. Outra atração local é a pesca artesanal, que pode ser vista e praticada em diversas praias do município ao longo de sua orla. A Praia do Tombo receberá pelo décimo ano consecutivo a Bandeira Azul, um certificado internacional que avalia 33 critérios, subdivididos em educação e informação ambiental, qualidade da água, gestão ambiental e segurança, além de serviços. Possui um Núcleo de Informação e Educação Ambiental, que é responsável por toda a parte de informação e educação ambiental, e também pela conservação e fiscalização dos critérios a serem cumpridos para a manutenção da Bandeira Azul.Sua economia esta apoiada na atividade turística, e também possui atividade marítima, de lazer, indústria, além de uma intensa atividade portuária.
