Os municípios vizinhos a Palmas são respectivamente: Lajeado e Aparecida do Rio Negro ao norte; Novo Acordo e Santa Tereza do Tocantins ao leste; Monte do Carmo ao sudeste e ao sul; Porto Nacional ao sul, ao sudoeste e ao oeste; e Miracema do Tocantins ao noroeste. Dentre os outros cursos d'água que passam pelo município, destacam-se o Rio das Balsas, o Ribeirão das Pedras, o Ribeirão Taquaruçu, o Córrego Macaco e o Ribeirão Taquaruçu Grande. Possui como elementos naturais e artificiais de destaque o rio Tocantins, que banha grande parte de seu território a oeste, e parte do lago da usina hidrelétrica de Lajeado, formado pelas águas do mesmo rio.
