The more important population number related to agriculture emissions is the number of dairy cows in Dane County, which is 135,000. The methane and nitrous oxide emissions inventory/calculations were conducted specifically for our climate action plan by a lead researcher on a dairy industry GHG emission research project call the Dairy Coordinated Agricultural Project. This research which spanned 7 years, invested $10 million and involved 33 co-principle research institutions (USDA, research universities and dairy businesses groups) was led by the University of Wisconsin -- Madison and looked at the carbon, methane and nitrous oxide emissions from small and large dairy farms in the Great Lakes region. I rate the level of confidence in our inventory as medium because the science surrounding these emissions is much less understood than the science on carbon emissions from fossil fuel use. However, i strongly believe that the researchers involved in this project are in the best position to calculate the emissions. I also believe that because of this research (among other factors) Dane County is in a position to lead the nation in the understanding of GHG emissions from diary based agriculture. | 07/16/2021 01:47:15 | |||

When using the inventory data for aggregation, comparison and trend analysis, please note that the inventory data is based on non-verified self-reported city inputs. The reported inventory may not include all emission sources within the city boundary.
Please note that this dataset may contain data from cities or, in some instances, groups of cities at different administrative levels. This includes metropolitan areas, combined authorities, and 5 American regional councils, which are: Chicago Metropolitan Mayors Caucus; Denver Regional Council of Governments; Metropolitan Council, Twin Cities; Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments; and Mid-America Regional Council.
