The text that follows is mainly taken from this note. NERVE is a model that quantifies greenhouse gas emissions from road traffic for Norwegian municipalities. The model calculates emissions for all traffic-registered vehicles of type LL 12345. To capture the effects of local conditions, high spatial resolution and detailed input data are required. NERVE is built on «bottom-up» - principles, ie that it is based on geographically high-resolution activity data - traffic work (TA) per road link, which is multiplied by emission factors (EF) differentiated across car fleets and driving situations to calculate emissions (E). All emission calculations are described in principle by the equation: E = TA × EF NERVE calculates emissions for different vehicle categories where the emissions depend on both the vehicle's size, fuel (petrol, diesel, LPG, CNG, electric), type and Euro technology, but also which driving situation, ie speed, incline, type of road, traffic flow and surroundings in which the vehicle is located in. The model is mainly based on 4 detailed data sets that cover most of the available information about road traffic in Norway: Road network, all public roads from the National Road Data Bank (NVDB) 2.
