The Government of Canada’s official GHG target is 523 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2030, a 30% reduction over 2005 levels. The Province of Ontario had implemented the Climate Change Mitigation and Low-carbon Economy Act. This former legislation required that Ontario develop a long-term framework for action on climate change, including establishing a cap and trade program. Ontario’s GHG targets included reductions from 1990 emissions levels of 15% in 2020, 37% in 2030 and 80% in 2050. More recently in 2018, the Province of Ontario created and adopted the "Made-in Ontario Environment Plan" which includes; updated targets as well as an update on the progress of the Province. This new plan now reflects the same base year of 2005 as the Federal Government and so far Ontario has made significant progress to address climate change. The provinces greenhouse gas emissions have dropped by 22 per cent since 2005. The current GHG targets include reductions from 2005 emission levels of 30% by 2030.St. Catharines above greenhouse gas targets are aligned with the Province of Ontario's former targets, which comply with meeting the same per capita emission reduction targets requirements. The former targets were more aggressive targets than the ones currently in place through the "Made-in Ontario Environment Plan." | 07/16/2021 01:47:15 | ||||
