StrategyClimate actions4.7gPlease provide details of your climate actions in the Land use sector.4Action description1Establish GHG reduction plan for LULUCF (e.g. REDD+, etc.)In May 2018, the Queensland Government passed legislation to end broadscale tree clearing in Queensland including:•ban broadscale clearing of remnant vegetation for agriculture•expand protections to include “high value regrowth” paving the way for an additional 232,000 ha of trees will be protected.•increase, up to almost treble, the maximum penalties that courts could impose for illegal clearing to more than half-a-million-dollars•give compliance officers more powers and enforcement tools•require farmers to get approval to thin vegetation•still allow farmers to harvest fodder trees to feed livestock. In April 2020 the first commercial round of Queensland’s Land Restoration Fund closed for applications. The round offered $100M for carbon projects that also deliver co-benefits. Outcomes of the round, including the projects offered investment agreements, will be announced before October 2020. Activities eligible for funding included vegetation planting and protection, increases in soil carbon in agricultural systems, reduction in emissions due to hot fires in northern savannas, and reductions in methane emission intensity from livestock. The $5 million Land Restoration Fund Pilot Projects Program provided funding for projects that expanded the scope of Queensland’s carbon farming industry through market development and on-ground projects that delivered carbon abatement.07/16/2021 02:29:27
