12890660142City of KisumuKenyaAfrica2. Climate Hazards and Vulnerability2.2Please identify and describe the factors that most greatly affect your city’s ability to adapt to climate change and indicate how those factors either support or challenge this ability.4Please describe how the factor supports or challenges the adaptive capacity of your city1Lack of basic services such as health care services, electricity and water supply makes communities vulnerable especially to the impacts of climate change
12890760142City of KisumuKenyaAfrica2. Climate Hazards and Vulnerability2.2Please identify and describe the factors that most greatly affect your city’s ability to adapt to climate change and indicate how those factors either support or challenge this ability.4Please describe how the factor supports or challenges the adaptive capacity of your city2The cost of living in Kisumu county is high due to its dependancy on products from other counties .This reduces the financial capacity of individuals to adapt to abrupt climatic disasters such as drought and floods.
12890860142City of KisumuKenyaAfrica2. Climate Hazards and Vulnerability2.2Please identify and describe the factors that most greatly affect your city’s ability to adapt to climate change and indicate how those factors either support or challenge this ability.4Please describe how the factor supports or challenges the adaptive capacity of your city3The adaptive capacity of the county is highly dependent on the adaptive infrastructural capacity of the county. The current state of infrastructure such as roads and buildings are not well climate proof. Majority infrastructure within the urban setting of the county are not climate proofed
12890960142City of KisumuKenyaAfrica2. Climate Hazards and Vulnerability2.2Please identify and describe the factors that most greatly affect your city’s ability to adapt to climate change and indicate how those factors either support or challenge this ability.4Please describe how the factor supports or challenges the adaptive capacity of your city4Our observation indicates malaria is by far the most prevalent disease in the county at (55%). HIV/AIDS and respiratory diseases followed this at 21% and 16%, respectively. flooding is the main cause of the diseases. The public health situation in Kisumu is poor due to insufficient planning and rapid expansion of informal settlements that increases the prevalence of diseases such as malaria and cholera . Waste Management has also been a problem exacerbating health challenges within the county.
12891060142City of KisumuKenyaAfrica2. Climate Hazards and Vulnerability2.2Please identify and describe the factors that most greatly affect your city’s ability to adapt to climate change and indicate how those factors either support or challenge this ability.4Please describe how the factor supports or challenges the adaptive capacity of your city5> key environmental issue is poor sewage system, especially in the informal settlement areas such as Kondele, Obunga, Nyalenda and Manyatta. In some estates such as Kondele the team observed situations where residents were using fresh water mixed with sewage because of lack of alternative.Kisumu county's environmental conditions in terms of weather and climate is modified due to the proximity to Lake Victoria thus the county is Hot and Wet in nature. This exacerbates the impacts of climate change whereby dry periods become drier and wet periods become wetter thus floods become more intensive and droughts become more severe. The forest cover of Kisumu county is less than 0.5% thus most of the land is bare increasing the effects of drought and impact of floods. Trees/forests are known to be are one of the main carbon sinks in the world. Diminishing tree cover there means more carbon dioxide emission to the atmosphere. Further trees have important roles in the ecosystem where they provide both products such as fuel, timber and poles and services such as soil fertility management, shade etc. It is therefore a big concern that tree cover is diminishing in the County. The soil type is dominated by black cotton soil and sand soil thus most places in the county are unsustainable for agriculture .Waste management has been a challenge ; open dumping of the waste and lack of a proper sanitary landfill
12891160142City of KisumuKenyaAfrica2. Climate Hazards and Vulnerability2.2Please identify and describe the factors that most greatly affect your city’s ability to adapt to climate change and indicate how those factors either support or challenge this ability.4Please describe how the factor supports or challenges the adaptive capacity of your city6Infrastructure conditions of the roads in rural areas of the county are currently in a poor state for instance some roads are impassable during floods period and drainage systems cannot handle the population pressure. The poor road infrastructures also increases the occurrence of flash floods during rainy season .
12891260142City of KisumuKenyaAfrica2. Climate Hazards and Vulnerability2.2Please identify and describe the factors that most greatly affect your city’s ability to adapt to climate change and indicate how those factors either support or challenge this ability.4Please describe how the factor supports or challenges the adaptive capacity of your city7The government both at national and county levels have committed to the prioritization of climate change into the development policies for instance the national government developed a climate change action plan and a subsequent response strategy for adaptation .The county government has set up a climate change directorate to tackle climate change at a local level in Kisumu county .This has set the stage for improvement of capacity of local governments to tackle climate change mitigation and adaptation at the county level. The county has also approved the Kisumu County climate change policy and a climate change act of 2020.
12891360142City of KisumuKenyaAfrica2. Climate Hazards and Vulnerability2.2Please identify and describe the factors that most greatly affect your city’s ability to adapt to climate change and indicate how those factors either support or challenge this ability.4Please describe how the factor supports or challenges the adaptive capacity of your city8The poor planning of urban development in the county has seen an influx in rise in informal settlements cropping up around the city centre .This has put pressure on ecological sectors such as the wetlands and forests ,leading to the dwindling of both. Informal settlements also come with a problem of waste management thus increasing the spread of diseases.
