It consists mostly of forests and lakes, but there is also areas of agricultural land. It is the administrative centre of the region. Växjö has a long tradition of being the centre of trade and education as well, and is the location for the Linnaeus University. The politicians started to devote themselves to more environmental work already in the 1970's. In 1996, a unanimous climate target of becoming fossil fuel free was adopted. In 2019, a Sustainability Program was adopted, embracing all aspects of sustainability in the same steering document.
