It is the country's third most populous urban area, with a population of 215,100 residents as of June 2020. The current population is forecast to grow to near 250,000 by 2043.The city is situated alongside Wellington Harbour and surrounded by hills, with 99 km of coastline. Wellington city is bounded by Porirua city in the north, Lower Hutt city in the north-east, Wellington Harbour in the south-east, Cook Strait in the south, and the Tasman Sea in the west. The climate of Wellington is temperate marine, generally moderate all year round with warm summers and mild winters, and rarely sees temperatures above 25C or below 4C. It is the world’s windiest city by average wind speed.Wellington city has a square kilometre area of 290km, and is more densely populated than most other cities in New Zealand due to the restricted amount of land that is available between its harbour and the surrounding hills. It has very few open areas in which to expand, and this has brought about the development of the suburban towns. The area has high seismic activity, with a major fault, the Wellington Fault, running through the centre of the city and several others nearby. Several hundred minor fault lines have been identified within the urban area. Wellington is a compact city and is known for being a walkable, vibrant and creative area. As the capital, it is home to central government agencies, Parliament and the Supreme Court, along with many public sector agencies. Over 23% of Wellington residents have a bachelor degree or higher qualification. Incomes in Wellington city are well above the average for New Zealand, with an average household income of $110,446 NZD. Fifty-one percent of our population is under 35 years old, 10% is of Māori decent, and 33% were born overseas. This data is collected through the CDP-ICLEI Unified Reporting System. When using this data, please cite both organisations using the following wording: ‘This data was collected in partnership by CDP and ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability’.
This dataset contains a subset of the related full cities dataset, covering GHG emissions inventory and mitigation action questions for publicly disclosing cities in 2021. The platform is still open and the dataset is updated daily to reflect new submissions.
