123254Cities 202120213429Stockholms stadSwedenEurope0. Introduction0.1Please give a general description and introduction to your city including your city’s reporting boundary in the table below.2Description of city1Please completeStockholm is the capital of Sweden.Stockholm was mentioned for the first time as a city in 1252, and in 1436 as the capital of Sweden. Currently, the municipality has about 981,000 residents and is growing rapidly in a region of close to 2 million. The City Council is the City of Stockholm’s supreme decision-making body. The 101 members are elected in general elections. After the 2018 elections, the Moderate Party, the Liberal Party, the Green Party, the Centre Party and the Christian Democrats make up the majority. The other parties in the City Council form the opposition, and often have a different opinion than the majority. The opposition consists of the Social Democratic Party, the Left Party, Feminist Initiative and the Sweden Democrats. Stockholm has a long and unbroken tradition of ambitious environmental efforts. One hundred years ago, the main goal was to create healthy residential environments. Today, the City works on a broad scale within all areas to improve the environment. Construction of the city’s first district heating system began at the end of the 1950s. Since the mid-1960s, oil and coal have been gradually replaced with biofuel. Waste-sorting began in the 1970s and now includes glass, plastic, paper, cardboard, metal, electronics and chemicals. Efforts related to the climate issue have gained an increasingly prominent role. All of the City’s companies and administrations have now been instructed to carry out their operations in a manner that minimizes their impact on the climate.01/20/2022 02:27:05
