126520Cities 2021202154396Can Tho CityViet NamSoutheast Asia and Oceania0. Introduction0.1Please give a general description and introduction to your city including your city’s reporting boundary in the table below.2Description of city1Please completeLocated in the Lower Mekong River basin and the center of the Mekong Delta, Can Tho serves as the political and commercial hub of the Mekong Delta region. The city shares borders with An Giang Province in the north, Dong Thap and Vinh Long Province in the east, Kien Giang Province in the west, and Hau Giang Province in the south. It is 75km away from the East Sea, 169 km from Ho Chi Minh City, and 1.877 km from Hanoi City. Can Tho is the youngest among the 5 municipalities of Vietnam. It was created at the beginning of 2004 by a split of the former Can Tho Province into 2 new administrative units: Can Tho City and Hau Giang Province. With a total area of 1,439 km2, Can Tho is Vietnam's fourth-largest city in Viet Nam and the largest city of the Mekong Delta - a region in the southwest of Vietnam where the Mekong River approaches and empties into the sea through a network of distributaries. The Mekong Delta is considered to be the “rice basket” of Vietnam as it contributes more than 50 % of the national rice production. Can Tho has a small diurnal temperature range and two distinct seasons: the rainy season lasting from May to November, and the dry season from December to April. The annual average temperature is from 26.8 – 28oC. The average rainfall is about 1.700mm/year, which is concentrated in September and October.Possessing a dense network of rivers and canals, Can Tho is considered as “a city of the water region” with well-known and appealing floating markets on rivers and closely fruited gardens. The total length of the waterway in Can Tho reaches more than 1,000 km.Can Tho is of a population of 1,240,730 people in 2020 and a population density of 886 people/km². The urban population is 860,393 people, accounting for 69.66% of the total. The city is home to some ethnic groups including the Chinese and Khmer. The average population growth rate in the ten years of 2009 - 2019 was only 0.39% - a negligible increase. Over the past ten years, Can Tho has transformed its economic structure from traditional agriculture to industry, commerce, services, tourism and business. Can Tho is forecasted to become the region's center for high-tech agricultural production and aquaculture, food processing, and exports; and thereby becoming a key factor in ensuring food security in the Mekong Delta region. The city is the source of economic, cultural, scientific, and technical impetus for the entire Mekong Delta region. Can Tho also has the most well-developed infrastructure system in the Mekong River Delta region, which includes Can Tho International Airport, two industrial parks, Cai Cui Port, etc. The city is also the center for education and research of the Mekong Delta region with several well-known affiliations such as Can Tho University, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Software Technology Center, and Research Institutes. Can Tho is transforming itself to become Viet Nam’s first smart city in the southwestern region by 2025. By transforming itself into a smart city, Can Tho hopes to further encourage its civic engagement, increase competitiveness, and improve the city’s socio-economic development. The city is also carrying out a project worth 322 million USD to develop and enhance urban adaptability, which consists of three major components: (1) flood control and environmental sanitation improvement (2) urban corridor development (3) urban management improvement to adapt to climate change. Can Tho is also one of six key cities implementing the project on developing Vietnamese cities to respond to climate change. However, the socio-economic infrastructure, especially the transport infrastructure of the city, is not synchronous and well-developed, which is a bottleneck for the development of Can Tho in particular and the Mekong Delta region in general. Can Tho Map.png01/20/2022 02:27:05
