132860Cities 2021202143907City of Indianapolis, INUnited States of AmericaNorth America0. Introduction0.1Please give a general description and introduction to your city including your city’s reporting boundary in the table below.2Description of city1Please completeIndianapolis was founded in 1821 as a planned city for the new seat of State government, replacing Corydon. The city government moved to a uni-gov system in 1970, meaning the city and county offices function as a single jurisdiction, giving the city a total area of almost 400 square miles. Indianapolis is located in the center of the state and is the junction for six Interstate highways, six U.S. highways, and four state roads. Indianapolis is considered a "high sufficiency" global city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network. Indianapolis is the capital and most populous city of Indiana, and also the county seat of Marion County. In 2013, the city's estimated population according to the U.S. Census Bureau was 843,393, making it the 12th largest city in the U.S. The metropolitan area ranks 33rd largest in the U.S., with a 2013 population estimate of 1,953,961. Indianapolis has a diverse economy, relying on trade, transportation, utilities, professional and business services, education and health services, government, retail trade, leisure and hospitality, and manufacturing. Companies headquartered in the city include Eli Lilly, Anthem Inc., and Simon Property Group. The city has historically been a host for many large events, including hosting Super Bowl XLVI (2012), and it continues hosting numerous conferences and concerts throughout the year. Additionally, Indianapolis is home to the Indianapolis 500, which includes events like the 500 Festival Half Marathon, the biggest race in the United States, and the Indianapolis 500, the largest single-day sporting event in the world. The City of Indianapolis prides itself on being a government of action, and in 2008 the Office of Sustainability was created with the goal of building Indianapolis into one of the region’s most sustainable cities. Indianapolis aims to be a leader in addressing environmental and climate change concerns and has numerous initiatives underway to improve the city’s footprint. The City of Indianapolis County Council passed Resolution 2019-CPS-R-001 implementing Thrive Indianapolis, the City's first strategic sustainability action plan, on February 21, 2019, thereby amending the Master Plan of Marion County (Thrive, p. 3 [PDF]).01/20/2022 02:27:05
