Governance and Data Management | Governance | 1.0 | Please detail sustainability goals and targets (e.g. GHG reductions) that are incorporated into your city’s master plan and describe how these are addressed in the table below. | 2 | Description | 1 | In the NashvilleNext countywide general plan, city officials and local stakeholders set out to guide population and job growth in a way that does not compromise natural resources, enhances public access to green space, and ensures equity and inclusion, serving a prosperous and resilient future in a changing climate. The Trust for Public Land’s (TPL) national Climate-Smart Cities program provided key planning and decision-making support to help Nashville achieve climate resiliency by leveraging the power of green infrastructure for those who need it most. Together with city and community partners, TPL contributed cutting-edge science, Geographic Information Systems planning, and innovative design to help drive park, open space and green-infrastructure solutions in preparing the city and its most vulnerable for a climate-resilient future.TPL and the Metro-Nashville Planning Dept. convened a team of experts to research, design, and build the tools to help increase Nashville's resilience to climate change. This strategy is intended to score all projects in Nashville's Capital Improvements Budget from a climate-adaptation lens, i.e.:- Trails and transit lines to provide carbon-free transportation and link residents to popular destinations and each other.- Shady green spaces to reduce the urban “heat island” effect, protect people from heat waves, and reduce summer energy use.- Water-smart parks, playgrounds, and green alleys to absorb rainfall, reduce flooding, and recharge drinking water supplies while saving energy for water management.- Parks and natural lands to protect vulnerable infrastructure, neighborhoods, and residents from riverine flooding. The NashvilleNext countywide general plan reports that the average nighttime temperatures have risen 1.8°F since 1950 (expected to rise another 5-9°F by 2100). A web-based decision support tool and other related web applications foster effective collaboration and science-based prioritization for green infrastructure development. This Climate-Smart Cities planning tool considers climate risks in Nashville and identifies priority areas for multi-benefit green infrastructure investment—based on environmental threat and the location of vulnerable populations. The development of the tool was guided by a Technical Advisory Team with representatives from partner agencies, organizations, and universities. | 01/20/2022 02:27:05 | |||
