Governance and Data Management | Governance | 1.0 | Please detail sustainability goals and targets (e.g. GHG reductions) that are incorporated into your city’s master plan and describe how these are addressed in the table below. | 2 | Description | 6 | Sunderland’s five Neighbourhood Investment Plans (available at https://www.sunderland.gov.uk/Neighbourhood-Investment-Plans) which cover the five areas of the city - North, East and West Sunderland, Coalfields and Washington - aim to incorporate climate resilience through the prioritisation of tree and shrub planting programmes, improvement of drainage systems, reviewing of transport routes, reducing carbon footprint, creating green solutions, implementing traffic calming and investing in active travel infrastructure. The Riverside Sunderland Masterplan also ensures that tree planting and sustainable urban drainage will promote climate change resilience. Finally, Sunderland also has a city-wide Green Infrastructure strategy which prioritises the protection, enhancement, and repair of strategic green infrastructure corridors, addressing the green infrastructure deficit in areas of social, economic, and environmental need and future proofing the city for climate change.Climate change is a growing threat to business continuity in Sunderland and across the globe. Sunderland City Council recognises it must build its resilience to severe weather impacts and prepare for climate change in order to minimise disruption or costs associated with damage to properties, declining productivity, illness and accidents, changes to prices or availability of raw materials, changes in the availability and cost of insurance and impact on global supply chains. This commitment is outlined within the Council’s Business Continuity and Strategic Framework which is aligned to the City Plan. | 01/20/2022 02:27:05 | |||

| 137632 | Cities 2021 | 2021 | 50579 | City of Winnipeg, MB | Canada | North America | 0. Introduction | 0.1 | Please give a general description and introduction to your city including your city’s reporting boundary in the table below. | 2 | Description of city | 1 | Please complete | The City of Winnipeg is a vibrant and growing community in the heart of the Canadian prairies. With its location around the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers, the area has served as a meeting place for Indigenous peoples for thousands of years. The broader region falls within Treaty #1 and is recognized as the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe, Cree and Dakota people, as well as the birthplace of the Metis Nation and Heart of the Metis Homeland. As the largest city in Manitoba, the approximately 764,000 residents who currently call Winnipeg home represent 60% of Manitoba’s total population. Incorporated in 1873, Winnipeg’s growth and development patterns were originally shaped by the railway, which supported the farming and agricultural industry of the region. Situated in the fertile Red River floodplain, the highly productive agricultural lands of the area have long defined the local character and economic life of Winnipeg. As such, farmland has historically influenced the settlement pattern and growth of the community. Winnipeg has a number of natural and economic assets that attract many people to live in and visit the City, and to enjoy its services, amenities and distinct culture. Winnipeg experiences a continental climate with a vast temperature range from hot summers to very cold winters. Its flat topography and location on a floodplain make the city prone to flooding, though the city’s Red River Floodway (built in 1969; expanded in 2009) provides some protection. The city is a multi-cultural municipality and regional centre with a diverse economy based on manufacturing, service, government and trade. After relatively flat growth in the 1980s and 1990s, Winnipeg has been experiencing rapid population growth since 2011. This growth is largely driven by immigration. This growth is forecast to continue at a rate of about 9,000 to 10,000 new residents per year over the next 20 years. Winnipeg's continental climate includes four distinct seasons with a variety of weather conditions throughout the year. We’re famous for our hot summers (+26 degrees Celsius average) and equally known for our icy winters (-12 degrees Celsius average). One constant here is sunshine: Winnipeg is one of Canada’s sunniest cities, and the weather in all seasons is characterized by an abundance of sunshine. Winnipeg is located in the wide, nearly-flat Red River Valley. Because of its extremely flat topography, heavy clay soils and substantial snowfall, Winnipeg is subject to annual flooding. A system of dikes and diversions, including the 47km-long Red River Floodway, are used to manage water in the city. Drainage must always be dealt with thoughtfully here, evidenced by the city’s comprehensive land drainage system. This system requires space, and is comprised of many retention structures including innovative constructed wetlands. Winnipeg is a prairie city, a winter city, a sunshine city and a river city. The diversity of weather we experience, along with our topography, creates unique planning and development opportunities and challenges. Winnipeg’s central location in North America has long been an asset to our economy, beginning with the intercontinental trade route in the late 1700's and later with the railway and the east-west trucking transportation corridors. Winnipeg’s role in continental and international trade is set to expand further. Altus Clayton, a firm of leading urban economists, has noted the strategic strength of our airport and transportation and logistics sector. | 01/20/2022 02:27:05 | |||
