145314Cities 2021202143932Auckland CouncilNew ZealandSoutheast Asia and Oceania0. Introduction0.1Please give a general description and introduction to your city including your city’s reporting boundary in the table below.2Description of city1Please completeAuckland is the major economic centre in New Zealand and the first city of the Pacific. Uniting eight previous territorial and regional councils, Auckland Council is an innovation in coordinated governance at a scale that is unprecedented in New Zealand. The city has an overarching goal of net zero emissions by 2050 and an ambitious interim reduction target of 50% by 2030 (against a 2016 baseline). These goals are supported through the implementation of Te Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri: Auckland’s Climate Plan. The council is working across the organization on establishing goals and targets for climate adaptation. Auckland is an exceptionally diverse city. Nearly 40% of our population was born overseas, with more than 180 different ethnicities among our citizenry. The largest Pacific population in the world resides here. As climate change affects the Pacific, it will be felt in Auckland. In order to become a world-class city, Auckland is embarking on major transformations of its transport system and urban development and design. In the next 10 years (2021-2031) an extra $5.6 billion will be injected into transport, housing and the environment to take the total investment to $31.8 billion, a 21 per cent increase on the previous budget. This will help Auckland and New Zealand pull out of the COVID-19 crisis while addressing transport and traffic congestion, sustaining and enhancing the environment, improving water quality and the resilience of our water supply, building more infrastructure for housing and tackling the threats posed by climate change. Auckland Council is investing to create a modern, efficient and attractive public transport system. The city has seen public transport patronage accelerate from 60 million trips in 2010 to 100 million trips in 2019. Construction is underway on the City Rail Link which will enable a doubling of rail network capacity. An urban redevelopment agency, Eke Panuku Development Auckland, has been tasked with unlocking the potential of town centres for denser and more sustainable living.01/20/2022 02:27:05
