149213Cities 2021202154105City of Duluth, MNUnited States of AmericaNorth America0. Introduction0.1Please give a general description and introduction to your city including your city’s reporting boundary in the table below.2Description of city1Please completeDuluth is a port city in the U.S. state of Minnesota and the county seat of St. Louis County. Duluth has a population of 85,618, making it Minnesota's fourth-largest city and the center of Minnesota's second largest metropolitan area, with a population of 278,799. Duluth forms a metropolitan area with neighboring Superior, Wisconsin; together, they are called the Twin Ports. Situated on the north shore of Lake Superior at the westernmost point of the Great Lakes, Duluth is the largest metropolitan area (and second-largest city) on the lake and is accessible to the Atlantic Ocean 2,300 miles (3,700 km) away via the Great Lakes Waterway and St. Lawrence Seaway. The Port of Duluth is the world's farthest inland port accessible to oceangoing ships, and the largest and busiest port on the Great Lakes. A tourist destination for the Midwest, Duluth features the United States' only all-freshwater aquarium, the Great Lakes Aquarium; the Aerial Lift Bridge, which is adjacent to Canal Park and spans the Duluth Ship Canal into the Duluth–Superior harbor; and Minnesota Point (known locally as Park Point), the world's longest freshwater baymouth bar, spanning 6 miles (10 km).The Anishinaabe and other Tribal Nations inhabiting this area, including the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, sustained their communities through a balanced relationship with the land, the river, and the lake for over 10,000 years. Now, under the direction of its residents and with the guidance of city leadership, The City of Duluth seeks to continue sustainable development - centering the needs of current residents, future generations, and the environment while in pursuit of economic prosperity.Duluth’s goal of 80% reduction of Greenhouse gasses by 2050 will result in a more resilient Duluth, ready to tackle the effects of our changing climate and pollution. 149241Cities 2021202160018City of ZamboangaPhilippinesSoutheast Asia and Oceania1. Governance and Data ManagementGovernance1.0Please detail sustainability goals and targets (e.g. GHG reductions) that are incorporated into your city’s master plan and describe how these are addressed in the table below.2Description6Wastewater: As of 2016, there are approximately 900 connections from household and establishments connected to the existing sewerage collection system within the Zamboanga City Water District's (ZCWD) franchise area. However there are few private companies that provide desludging services in which not all comply with environmental regulations and some lacking in appropriate treatment facilities. In a study made by the Western Mindanao State University, 74.14% of commercial and institutional establishments within the city have sanitation facilities or installed septic tanks which only have 40% treatment efficiency.Due to this situation, the Philippine Water Revolving Fund Support Program (PWRFSP) together with ZCWD has identified sewerage catchment areas that best fit the city. This involves construction of a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and the required interconnection works for the sewered areas (Phase I) and the sewer network rehabilitation to include the pumping stations, development of expansion areas, and expansion of STP constructed in Phase I to accommodate sewage flows from theexpansion areas. However, in the USAID Be Secure project study, septage management that could be implemented in the city to service the areas that is not covered by the sewerage system and its expansion areas need to be undertaken.Solid wasteCurrently, the city is operating a Sanitary Landfill Facility (SLF) in a 10.6 hectare property located at Barangay Salaan which started operation last March 31, 2015. The SLF is designed to receive the City’s solid waste for 15 years at a rate of 200 tons/day. The city also plans to establish transfer stations for the west and east coast barangay. Currently, the SLF is operating the first cell that receives residual waste, at the end of the process with an average rate of 160 tons per day.Hazardous WasteAs of 2015, there are 85 generators of hazardous wastes in the City. The EMB IX registered generators are hospitals, industries, cell sites, power plant, electricity transmission stations, fuel related institutions, schools, radio stations and military facilities. It is also reported that wastes containing mercury has greatly increased in a span of three (3) years. The greatest waste generation is the pathological and infectious waste among the hazardous waste in the City followed by used oil.01/20/2022 02:27:05
