Governance and Data ManagementGovernance1.6Please provide information on the overall impact of COVID-19 on climate action in your city.2Comment1ResponseWhile the COVID-19 pandemic inevitably required a short-term focus on the public health situation for the local authority, the desire to ensure that the recovery process aligns with the Council's climate change objectives has informed key strategic plans developed since the start of the pandemic. These include the Council's Corporate Plan 2021-22 (adopted in March 2021), the Reading Climate Emergency Strategy 2020-25 (developed by the Reading Climate Change Partnership and endorsed by the Council in November 2020) and the 'Powered by People' economic recovery strategy (developed by the town's economic development agency Reading UK and endorsed by the Council in September 2020). Each of these strategies reinforce the commitment to the 'net zero by 2030' target. The pandemic disrupted the Council's ability to deliver its capital programme, including green energy programmes, but funding for these has been protected and rolled forward so that implementation can continue as planned pre-pandemic. Cycling rose from 4% of total journeys to 7% in the early stages of the pandemic and action has been taken to include provision for cycling and walking with the aim of ensuring that the switch to active modes of travel is sustained.01/20/2022 02:27:05
