Uruapan, cuya traducción de la lengua purépecha es "lugar donde los árboles siempre tienen fruto", presume bellos atractivos naturales como su parque nacional "Barranca del Cupatitzio” que es visitado por miles de turistas al año. Punto de encuentro entre las regiones de tierra caliente y meseta purépecha y favorecido por sus condiciones geográficas, Uruapan lidera la principal región productora de aguacate del país, con una producción de 176,572 toneladas durante 2018, siendo las exportaciones a Estados Unidos el principal destino, por lo que es reconocida como “la capital mundial del aguacate” demostrando su gran potencial económico. Es además una ciudad que destaca por reunir gran diversidad cultural ya que en 2015 el 35.64% de su población declaró tener pertenencia indígena, por lo que es el municipio que concentra la mayor población purépecha en el país, situación que ha dado por resultado un particular y nutrido proceso histórico de sincretismo entre las culturas purépecha y española. Por lo anterior, Uruapan destaca como un punto estratégico para el desarrollo regional y nacional. Se localiza al oeste del Estado de Michoacán, México, en las coordenadas 19°25´ de latitud norte y 102°03´de longitud oeste, a una altura de 1,620 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Su superficie es de 1,014.3 kilómetros cuadrados. En cuanto a clima, predomina el templado, húmedo C(m) en el 35.6 % del territorio, seguido de los climas semicálido subhúmedo (A)C(w2) en 13.9% del territorio y templado, subhúmedo C(w2) en el 13.5% del territorio. En demografía, según cifras oficiales, en 2020 registró una población de 356,786 habitantes, el 93.8% vive en el medio urbano, 27.2% son personas menores de 15 años, el 25.4% son jóvenes de 15 a 29 años, el 39.4% son adultos de 30 a 64 años y el 7.9% son adultos mayores de 65 y más años de edad.
