347528Cities 2021202159552City of Davis, CAUnited States of AmericaNorth America0. Introduction0.1Please give a general description and introduction to your city including your city’s reporting boundary in the table below.2Description of city1Please completeDavis, a municipality located in California’s Central Valley fifteen miles from the state capitol, is noted for its desirable small-town atmosphere, collegiate influences (home to University of California, Davis), and strong emphasis on parks, greenbelts and open spaces. Davis is currently completing a comprehensive update to the 2010 Climate Action and Adaptation Plan. The 2020-2040 CAAP will identify a roadmap to measurable, enforceable, equitable and implementable actions toward community carbon neutrality by 2040, five years ahead of the State of California target. Additionally, in the short term, the CAAP will identify maximum efforts to implement carbon reduction actions by 2030, and bring Davis into compliance with state climate action legislation. Community engagement and outreach is an integral componen tin order to identify community values while developing strategies for carbon reduction. Toward that end, a key focus of the Davis CAAP is to fully incorporate equity, inclusion and diversity in the Davis context into the project planning and outreach. The CAAP website with more information is here: https://www.cityofdavis.org/sustainability/2020-climate-action-and-adaptation-plan-caap Significant related work in the community makes Davis a role model in the region, state and nation. In a ground-breaking public health collaboration, Healthy Davis Together is a joint project between City of Davis and UC Davis with a goal to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and facilitate a coordinated return to regular city activities and reintegration of UC Davis students back into the community. In the transportation sector, Unitrans, one of the largest student-run bus transit systems in the world, is operated jointly by Associated Students of UCD and City of Davis. More than 50 miles of bicycle paths in Davis' greenbelt and transportation network support more bicycles per capita than any other U.S. city. Within the city, there are 36 parks, 485 acres of greenbelts, and 640 acres of open space owned and maintained by the City that provide critical wildlife habitat and opportunities for natural recreational experiences. These lands include agricultural buffers, grasslands/uplands and riparian habitat, wetlands, and native plant sites. The City also owns about 1,300 acres of farmland leased for agriculture production. The City uses a variety of tools to protect open space, including conservation easements, land purchases, an open space parcel tax (Measure O), a “Right to Farm” Ordinance which includes requirements for an agricultural buffer around the community, conservation partnerships, education and outreach, and a requirement for an affirmative citizen vote for General Plan Amendments that re-designate agricultural/open space land to urban uses (Measure R). A Northern California Mecca for artists of many media, Davis features a community-built Art Center, the restored downtown Varsity Theater, more than two dozen private and public galleries, a monthly downtown "Art-About", and an exciting collection of public sculptures, murals and other art installations, many by local artists. UC Davis’s Mondavi Center and Shrem Museum of Art bring world class culture, art and events to the area. The International House is a haven for foreign visitors, scholars, student sand local residents. The Davis Farmers Market, held year-round on Wednesdays and Saturdays in Central Park, provides fresh local fruits and vegetables (often organic). Additionally, market-goers can find gourmet foods, live entertainment, specialty products, and arts and crafts. In summary, Davis is known for innovation and leadership in sustainability, stewardship, and fostering cultural, environmental and social amenities that provide significant quality of life for its residents. Recognized as an environmentally aware and socially pioneering city, residents of Davis are active advocates for political causes, sports, arts, and social organizations.01/20/2022 02:27:05
