Governance and Data ManagementGovernance1.7Please provide information specifically on the impact of the COVID-19 economic response on climate action in your city and synergies between COVID-19 recovery interventions and climate action.3Explanation1ResponseAlthough the COVID-19 pandemic drastically reduced finance available for climate action in 2020, the Office of Sustainability was still able to accomplish a significant portion of its outreach and agenda it had planned for the year. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic illustrated to city officials across all departments the importance of inclusivity & equity and how those communities in the city that were adversely affected by COVID-19 are likely to be the same communities that will be heavily impacted by climate change. This has led to the development of departmental task forces to identify how their work impacts the environment, work to reduce their impact on the environment as much as possible, and include a variety of voices from the departments to ensure all ideas and perspectives are being considered and respected. The city has also heavily focused on the sea wall that will be constructed to help protect vulnerable communities, working diligently to expedite the approval process this year after seeing how vulnerable communities were affected by COVID-19. The City has shown that it must implement protective and recovery strategies for climate change that mimic the City's focus on serving communities during the pandemic. The city provided meals, water, and vaccines to communities that were unable to travel or were immune-compromised. Although we were able to assist these communities, we have learned that many still struggled. As previously mentioned, this continues to motivate the city to do more than previously planned to alleviate the future issues that will be caused by climate change.01/20/2022 02:27:05
