351880Cities 2021202135993Singapore GovernmentSingaporeSoutheast Asia and Oceania14. Water SecurityWater Supply Management14.3Please select the actions you are taking to reduce the risks to your city’s water security.4Action description and implementation progress1Diversifying water supply (including new sources); Investment in existing water supply infrastructure.Two-thirds of Singapore is water catchment, which is made possible by having a separate rainwater and used water collection systems to ensure that our waterways are free from pollution. To further safeguard water quality in our catchments, we have also put in place stringent pollution control measures (e.g. by imposing silt discharge requirements on construction sites) and located heavy / pollutive industries and farms out of our water catchment areas. The “4 National Taps” strategy (water from local catchment, imported water, NEWater, and desalinated water) cushions our water supply against dry weather, and strengthens our supply resilience against dry weather climate change, increased water demand, and other risks. A water conservation programme is also in place to ensure water demand (and the energy needed to produce and distribute the water) does not rise at an unsustainable rate. Singapore currently has five NEWater factories and four desalination plants. One more desalination plant is currently being constructed. While NEWater and desalination are climate-independent water sources, they are energy-intensive. We are partnering leaders in water treatment technologies to test-bed new technologies and techniques to reduce the energy footprint.Climate change and increased urbanization will also affect the quality of stormwater collected. PUB’s waterworks will be adopting more advanced treatment processes (membranes, ozonation, electro-chlorination etc) which will lead to increased energy consumption in treatment. Our drainage, water supply, and sewerage infrastructure are located in limited underground space alongside other utility services such as gas, electricity and telecoms. It is increasingly challenging to lay new drains and pipes, repair damaged pipes and replace aging pipes and drains in a built-up environment. PUB is working with government agencies and utilities on better ways to manage the space, and coordinate the laying of services.01/20/2022 02:27:05
