It has a population of 1,704,694 (2016) living in an area measuring 365 square kilometres. It is the largest city, by population, in the province, the second largest in the country, and the fifteenth largest in North America. The city is governed by a mayor and an executive council. Administrative authority is divided between a central administration and the local administrations of its nineteen districts. The city of Montreal is co-extensive with fifteen other cities on the Island of Montreal, the regional entity that constitutes the agglomeration of Montreal. The Montréal urban agglomeration is governed by the Montréal Agglomeration Council. The agglomeration is composed of the following cities: Ville de Montréal, Ville de Baie-D'Urfé, Ville de Beaconsfield, Ville de Côte Saint-Luc, Ville de Dollard-Des-Ormeaux, Ville de Dorval, Ville de Hampstead, Ville de Kirkland, Ville de L'Île-Dorval, Ville de Montréal-Est, Ville de Montréal-Ouest, Ville de Mont-Royal, Ville de Pointe-Claire, Ville de Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, Village de Senneville and Ville de Westmount. The weighting of votes for the council breaks down to 87% for the City of Montréal and 13% for the other municipalities located on the Island of Montréal. The agglomeration population is estimated at 2,069,849 (2020). Its land area is 500 square kilometres. Montréal’s climate is classified as a humid continental. According to the Köppen-Geiger climate classification, Montréal has a cold climate with warm summers. Precipitation averages 806 mm annually, which includes about 210 cm of snowfall occurring from October through April. Summers are warm and humid, with temperatures averaging 20°C from June through August, while winters can be cold, snowy and windy, with temperatures averaging below freezing from December through March. Montréal’s economy features businesses in the following fields: commercial, aerospace, transportation, finance, pharmaceutical, technology, engineering, design, culture, tourism, film and world affairs.
