361436Cities 2021202131111Tokyo Metropolitan GovernmentJapanEast Asia14. Water SecurityWater Supply Management14.3Please select the actions you are taking to reduce the risks to your city’s water security.4Action description and implementation progress5The Tama River is a water source unique to Tokyo. Tokyo Metropolitan Government is working to secure a stable river flow of the Tama River and to conserve the Ogouchi Reservoir (Lake Okutama) by conserving the nature spreading in the upstream area of the Tama River in cooperation with various participants. Of the approximately 45,000 hectares of forest in the upstream area of the Tama River, approximately 24,000 hectares are managed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (as a water resource forest for tap water), and the remaining approximately 21,000 hectares are private forests. (1) Purchase of private forests: Since the 2010 fiscal year, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has purchased private forests through open recruitment. And from the 2017 fiscal year, TMG has positioned approximately 2,000 hectares, which are of particular concern for the impact on the Ogouchi Reservoir, as "priority areas for private forest purchase" and encouraged the owners to sell. By the end of December 2020, we had acquired 486 hectares in the region. (2) The Tama River Water Resources Forest Team: In 2002, the Tokyo Metropolitan Waterworks Bureau established the "Tama River Water Resources Forest Team" to regenerate the unkempt private forests into rich forests through conservation activities by volunteers. By the end of December 2020, more than 300 hectares of forest had undergone conservation activities. (3) Tokyo Water - Corporate Forest: Since the 2017 fiscal year, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has started the "Tokyo Water - Corporate Forest" (naming rights) initiative for the resource forest of tap water and had signed agreements with nine companies as of the end of December 2020. The fee for naming rights is 500,000 yen per hectare for one year, for a period of three years, giving the participating companies the right to name the area and carry out forest conservation activities. The fees received from the participating companies are used for the conservation and cultivation of the water resource forest including the area in question.01/20/2022 02:27:05
