Residents, community gardens and allotment holders were encouraged to #GrowanExtraRow for the Real Junk Food Project Project’s new pay-as-you-feel cafe in central Brighton. • A survey of the network of community gardens highlighted what support they needed and whether they were opening during lockdown. As a result, over 1,500 seedlings were delivered by BHFP). The seedlings were grown locally by Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) scheme, Fork and Dig It, who also produced fruit and veg growing hampers for residents to start growing at home. • Preston Park Demo Garden, Saunders Park Edible Garden and Stanford Community Garden have all been involved in growing veg for community food projects, including The Bevy and Brighton Table Tennis Club food hub.Brighton and Hove City Council runs a scheme for cafes, restaurants and takeaways that commit to preparing, cooking, and serving meals in a healthier way. Once a business has signed up, they can display the Healthy Choice logo in their business. The Healthy Choice scheme award is on healthy choices including promotion of fruit and vegetables and sugar reduction. There are additional sustainable food criteria set within the nurseries category).Local research found that residents want to know what's in their food and drink. They worry about how food affects their health. By becoming a Healthy Choice caterer businesses can:•Expand their market by appealing to people who choose a healthy lifestyle•Receive council recognition and free promotional materials•Get free advice, training and supportBusinesses get a certificate and promotional materials. They can use the Healthy Choice logo in their publicity. They get digital marketing materials and content for your website, social media, blog or newsletter. This will help customers recognise their business as one that provides healthy choices.•Free nutrition workshops and guidance that’s relevant businesses are offered•Information about local suppliers is shared, which makes it easier for businesses to choose healthy ingredients. •Details about upcoming events are published on the websiteSugar Smart City is a joint initiative from the council, Brighton & Hove Food Partnership and Jamie Oliver Food Foundation. Organisations make a Sugar Smart commitment to support our efforts to tackle the sugar problem. They can make one of these pledges or come up with your own:•offer and promote free tap water to all customers•add a 10p to the price of sugary drinks to support the Children's Health Fund•offer a choice of low sugar or no added sugar drinks and snacks•offer small portions of sugary food and drinks•develop a healthy and low sugar children's menuOrganisations can use the hashtag #sugarsmartcity.BHCC also implement further projects and policies that aim to halt or prevent the nutrition transition by 2025 through the following routes:•A framework for a whole-school approach to food and activity, including breakfast clubs, snacks, celebrations, lunch boxes, food education and lunchtime dining experience. Focus on schools with the greatest need, e.g. those with higher childhood obesity figures and lower levels of fruit and veg consumption. •As part of our healthy weight work (our healthy weight programme board meets quarterly, chaired by BHCC) we have initiated the (now national) Sugar Smart Brighton and Hove campaign, we were the first city to introduce a voluntary sugary drinks tax influencing the introduction of the national ‘sugar tax’ ( promoting water / tap water and the reduction of sugary drinks consumption and use of SUPs locally) . All of this work has a focus on reducing HFSS foods of which a key theme will be the reduction of highly processed foods with support for cooking from scratch. The city's childhood obesity stats have been pretty good and moving in the right direction until recently. •The city performs comparatively well on breastfeeding (25% above the national average), in part, thanks to the promotion and support of breastfeeding through healthcare and community peer support programmes and more.Public health has been involved with this for 15 years+ so as we are now in the council it could and should count. We have very good breastfeeding rates in the city for a number of years now and breast feeding is one of the healthiest and most sustainable food choices combined. | 01/20/2022 02:27:05 | |||
