373335Cities 2021202173669San Luis Obispo, CAUnited States of AmericaNorth America1. Governance and Data ManagementGovernance1.7Please provide information specifically on the impact of the COVID-19 economic response on climate action in your city and synergies between COVID-19 recovery interventions and climate action.3Explanation1ResponseA key fixture of the City of San Luis Obispo’s economic recovery strategy was the closure and restriction of certain blocks to vehicle traffic to create pedestrian-only spaces for walking, cycling, and other active transportation along with more bike storage. This effort was planned in coordination with the City’s outdoor dining initiative. Ultimately, this allowed the City’s downtown area to be much more accessible to walkers and cyclists, and the City is currently in the process of making some of the pedestrian-only zones permanent. This is a strong example of an initiative that the Office of Sustainability would have liked to have pursue sooner but would not have been possible without the need presented by COVID-19 economic recovery.01/20/2022 02:27:05
