378254Cities 2021202153254City of HobartAustraliaSoutheast Asia and Oceania0. Introduction0.1Please give a general description and introduction to your city including your city’s reporting boundary in the table below.2Description of city1Please completeHobart is Australia's second oldest and southern most Capital City, settled in 1804. It is one of four municipalities covering the metropolitan area of the capital of Tasmania, Australia, and one of 12 councils that make up southern Tasmanian region. The City is committed to providing leadership to the metropolitan and southern councils and working towards a coordinated and collaborative approach to climate change action by all Tasmanian councils.Located at 42 degrees south the City has a cool maritime temperate climate influenced by the southern oceans Roaring 40's and four distinct seasons. It nestles between the natural beauty of Mt Wellington (1270m) and the Derwent River estuary. The estuary's deep water harbour has a rich maritime history with the City's port including one of the toughest blue water classics, the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race and the homeport for Australia’s new icebreaker, Nuyina in voyaging to Antarctica, and supports a working fishing fleet. The City has outstanding natural, cultural and social qualities that make it unique among capital cities. It has considerable natural values - over 60% of its municipal area is native vegetation - and is recognised as a clean and green capital city. The City is committed to protecting and enhancing these values and encouraging sustainable lifestyles across its municipal area. Hobart’s geography, climate and weather patterns make the region home to a wide variety of species, some of which are found nowhere else. The City of Hobart manages over 4500 ha of bushland, which includes grasslands, coastal reserves, dry forest, wet forest, rainforest and sub-alpine and alpine zones and are home to all kinds of native wildlife. The City’s built form has many unique heritage building’s that create a low rise and human scaled size that encourage a relaxed lifestyle, though has recently experienced an influx of investment into new hotels and residential complexes. It has a population of 53,000 which doubles on a daily basis as people come from Greater Hobart (which has a population of 250,000) and southern region to work, study and shop. Tasmania's seat of government and key research institutions, such as the University of Tasmania and Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies, are based in the City. As a local government, one of three tiers of Government in Australia and exists only by legislation, the City is responsible for: building planning regulations, parks & reserves, rubbish collection, local roads and infrastructure. Whereas the Tasmanian is responsible for hospitals, schools, police and housing services and the Australian government has broad national powers; it administers laws in relation to defence, immigration, foreign affairs, and trade as well as funding research for national policy settings & priorities. The City has been committed to climate change action since 2000, focusing on both reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate change impacts. It reduced its emissions by 70% from 2000 to 2010 and a further 17% from 2010 to 2020. It is adopted its third target of 20% emission reduction from 2020 levels by 2030. It has also approved its third climate change strategy, the Sustainable Hobart Action Plan 2020 - 2025 that contains over 50 individual actions in six areas:1. Leadership: Initiatives involving the City influencing, educating or collaborating with other governments and stakeholders2. Mobility: Initiatives to move around the city in more sustainable ways 3. Energy: Initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and use renewables more effectively and at lower cost4. Resilience: Initiatives that make Hobart better prepared for the changes climate change is bringing5. Waste: Initiatives to make better and more efficient use of resources and prevent them becoming pollutants at end of-life6. Governance: Initiatives that utilise the City of Hobart’s legislative frameworks to effect change.01/19/2022 02:30:06
